Elementary School Lesson Plan - Generative Thinking
Mountainside has a full library of lessons plans for levels K-12 and all disciplines: English, History, STEM, Arts, etc.

Overview:
Grade: 2nd Grade
Time: 50 min
Topic: AI Chat / Butterfly Lifecycle
Learning Goals:
Asking good questions to an AI Chatbot.
Focusing on processing the answer then asking follow-up questions.
Understanding the main stages of butterfly development.
Materials:
Short video on butterflies (such as “The Lifecycle of Butterflies – Science for Kids”)
Smartboard and computer
Sticky notes and markers
Lesson Steps:
1. Warm-up Activity (5 Min)
Write on the board, “What do we know about butterflies?”
Introduce the topic.
Take 3 to 5 suggestions from the students.
2. Watch the Video (5 to 8 Min)
Introduce the video and ask students to remember each step in the cycle.
Watch the video.
Ask what happens (first/next), then write all four answers on the board.
3. Introduce Chatbot and Model Follow-up Questions (5 Min)
Introduce the idea of AI answering questions and helping to learn (e.g., "What do we do if we have more questions about butterflies?").
Read and type a predetermined question into the chatbot (e.g., "How long do butterflies live?").
Read the answer, then explain follow-up questions.
Demonstrate follow-up questions by asking which type of butterfly lives the longest or which has the shortest lifespan.
4. Student Questions and Follow-up (10-15 Min)
Give each student a sticky note and ask them to write a butterfly question for the chatbot.
Review the questions, select one, and read it aloud as you type it into the chatbot.
Read the answer and ask for follow-ups.
If necessary, reinforce the idea of a follow-up versus a new question.
Make sure they process the previous answer before devising the next one.
5. New Question (5-10 Min)
After several follow-ups, enter a new question from the sticky notes.
Repeat the procedure with follow-up questions.
6. Closure / Reflections (5-10 Min)
What did we learn about butterflies?
What did we learn about questions and follow-ups?
What did we learn about working with chatbots?
Additional Thoughts:
For most questions to the chatbot, begin with, “How would you explain to a 2nd grader…”
You may want to copy a chat with the chatbot for the modeling portion of the lesson, rather than doing it live.
For advanced students, you can challenge them to look for incorrect or confusing parts of the answer.
